Lethal force situations present the most stressful and highest risk moments of any military or law enforcement career. Responsible, practical training can prepare an operator to not only survive these situations, but to react with the sound judgment and restraint necessary—ensuring a response sufficient to stop a lethal threat while minimizing unnecessary risk and injury. While firearm training forms the core of any lethal force program, it is easy to foresee a situation in which a firearm is inaccessible. Whether unable to draw, struggling for control of the weapon, in a high risk for over-shoot situation, or confronted with sudden mechanical failure, the ability to quickly and naturally deliver lethal force with anything other than a firearm will determine the outcome of the confrontation. TORIS specializes in designing lethal force curricula to teach high risk operators these necessary survival skills. Every curriculum we design delivers critical information using the latest, advanced adult learning principles, thoroughly covering such topics as: 1How to extend the concepts and scenario training for “shoot/don’t shoot” to include personal lethal force, with or without a firearm. 2How to identify lethal threats presented by personal weapons. 3How to naturally integrate firearms and personal weapons conceptually and practically using an active, real-time training format. 4How to structure personal lethal force training to satisfy both defined and open-ended scenarios. 5How to give experiential training to help identify what are, and what are not, acceptable levels of force. 6How to use teaching methods that ensure consistent execution safe for both trainees and instructors, while maintaining effectiveness in actual encounters.
Course Materials Our curricula utilize in-depth course materials, including dissection video for anatomy and dynamic motion synthesis to visualize severe injuries. Each curriculum includes video instruction, physical training and rubrics for testing and certifying trainees using a well documented and standardized format. Our written and physical tests ensure delivery on our terminal learning objectives, a thorough understanding of the concepts presented, and a demonstrated competence in the application of the course principles. In addition to the above, TORIS publishes the textbook Practical Injury: Sites, Mechanisms and Results, an edited atlas of severe injuries presented in advanced and layperson formats. And, of course, every curriculum comes standard with all of the industry specific expertise from our organization and collaborative partners, as well as access to the latest research maintained on the TORIS Reference Repository. The programs we design provide invaluable information for lethal force operators, and an educational background for vetting training methods and instructional courses against peer-reviewed adult learning, injury biomechanics, and emergency and sports medicine research. TORIS Research
Due to the serious nature of providing personnel with information on debilitating injury, as it applies to lethal force, TORIS is dedicated to ensuring that the most current scientific information is the foundation upon which all of our curricula are designed. This ensures that personal lethal force curricula are based upon demonstrable scientific fact, which has been directly investigated and evaluated by TORIS as well as by our collaborative partners.Read more…
Risk Management
With the ad hoc nature of Defensive Tactics (DT) technique selection, most agencies are operating without soundly engineered and medically reviewed DT programs. When instructors are untrained in the associated knowledge of injury mechanisms, scope, and probability, they may fail to communicate the actual risk of serious injury. In addition, there may be liberal use-of-force policies that do not take into account the disguised risk of injury… Read more…
